PUBLIC NOTICE

Cold War Veterans' Exemption
- Certificate No Longer Required -

New York State has recently revised the eligibility rules and a Cold War Recognition Certificate is no longer required to be eligible for the newly authorized Cold War Veterans’ Exemption. This exemption provides a partial tax exemption on the primary residence of qualifying veterans or un-remarried surviving spouse. The exemption would be levied on Town taxes only. To qualify, one must be a veteran or un-remarried surviving spouse of a veteran who served over one-year active duty from September 2, 1945 through December 26, 1991, discharged under Honorable conditions.

Applications must be filed in the Assessor’s office by March 1 and must be accompanied by a copy of the member’s DD-214. This exemption does not apply to School taxes. The applicant cannot be receiving exemption under other veterans’ exemption programs. The exemption is granted for 10 years and must be renewed annually. For more information, please contact the Assessor’s Office at 964-8748.

Veterans who are still interested in obtaining a Cold War Recognition Certificate should contact the U.S. Army Human Resources Command for an application form.
